Your first lawn can feel overwhelming—there’s mowing, edging, watering, weeds, and brown spots, and it’s easy to wonder where to begin. The good news: you don’t have to do everything at once. Start with the basics that make the biggest difference, then add more as you get comfortable.
Why the lawn matters
A neat lawn improves curb appeal and how your home is perceived—by you, your neighbors, and future buyers. You don’t need a golf course; you need consistent care: regular mowing, clean edges, and enough water when it’s dry.
Priority 1: Mow regularly
Set a height (about 3–3½ inches for most turf in Central Illinois) and mow often enough that you never remove more than about one-third of the grass blade. That keeps the lawn healthy and even. For the full how-to, see how to mow like a pro.
If you don’t own a mower yet, you can hire the job out. Many new homeowners use a service for the first season while they learn the property and decide whether they want to DIY long-term.
Priority 2: Edge and trim
Clean lines along the driveway and walkway, plus trimming around fences and beds, make the whole yard look finished. Do it every time you mow (or every other time) so it never gets out of hand. Details in edging and trimming basics.
Priority 3: Water when it’s dry
