Edging and Trimming Basics — Clean Lines and a Finished Look

Mowing gets the bulk of the lawn, but edging and trimming are what make it look finished. Clean lines along pavement and neat borders around beds and fences tell people you care about the details. Here’s how to do it yourself—and when it might make sense to let the pros handle it.

Why edging and trimming matter

Without edging, grass creeps onto driveways and walkways and the yard looks unkempt. Without trimming, you get a “halo” of long grass around trees, fences, and beds. Together, edging and trimming define the boundaries of your lawn and give it a sharp, intentional look.

  • Edging = creating a clear line between grass and hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt, pavers).
  • Trimming = cutting the grass the mower can’t reach (along fences, walls, plants, and obstacles).

Do both regularly and your lawn will look professional even before you add anything else.

How to edge along driveways and walkways

You can use a manual edger (half-moon or stick edger), a power edger, or a string trimmer turned on its side. The goal is a straight, vertical cut so grass doesn’t flop onto the pavement.

Steps:

  1. Choose your tool. Manual edgers are quiet and precise; power edgers and trimmers are faster on long runs.
  2. Follow the pavement. Keep the blade or string against the concrete (or just off it) and walk at a steady pace. Don’t dig deep—you only need to cut the grass and a bit of soil to create a clean edge.
  3. Do a single pass first. Get the line established, then come back and tidy any wobbles.
  4. Sweep or blow clippings off the pavement when you’re done so the edge looks crisp.

Frequency: Edge every time you mow, or at least every other time, so the line never gets overgrown. That’s how we keep edges sharp for our customers—consistency beats a once-a-season blitz.

How to trim where the mower can’t reach

Use a string trimmer (weed eater) to cut grass along:

  • Fences and walls
  • Flower beds and shrubs
  • Trees and posts
  • Tight corners and under rails

Tips:

  • Hold the trimmer so the string is roughly parallel to the ground for an even cut. Tilting too much can scalp the grass or leave it uneven.
  • Work in a consistent direction (e.g., left to right) so you don’t miss spots.
  • Don’t crowd trees or plants. Leave a small gap or a gentle ring so you don’t damage bark or stems.
  • Watch for wire, irrigation, and obstacles so you don’t nick lines or heads.

Trimming right after mowing keeps the lawn at one consistent height and removes the “just mowed but missed the edges” look.

What a good edge looks like

When you’re done edging, you should see:

  • A clear line between grass and pavement—no grass hanging over the concrete.
  • A slight trench or vertical face where the grass meets the pavement, so the edge holds its shape between sessions.
  • No ragged clumps along the line.

That’s the standard we aim for on every job: edges that look deliberate and hold up between visits.

Safety and tool care

  • Wear eye protection and closed-toe shoes when edging or trimming.
  • Keep the tool away from feet, pets, and bystanders. Clear the area of sticks and debris that could be thrown.
  • Replace trimmer line when it’s worn or short so the tool cuts efficiently and you’re not revving unnecessarily.

A little care with the tool keeps you safe and makes the work go faster.
